Background: Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan (AKHS, P) runs one of the largest not-for-profit private healthcare systems in the country, with a focus on the regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh. Its core focus includes initiatives for hard-to-reach populations through services like outreach clinics, training of community midwives to provide low-cost health services in remote areas, screening for non-communicable diseases, and digital health solutions.

Job Summary: The EPI Technician is responsible for planning and delivering routine immunization services under the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). The role ensures safe vaccination practices, proper cold chain management, accurate record keeping, community mobilization, and implementation of immunization campaigns to improve immunization coverage and reduce vaccine-preventable diseases.

Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan, is looking for a competent EPI Technician based at RHC Shagram, Upper-Chitral in Chitral Region. 

Key Responsibilities:

A. Routine Immunization Services

  • Provide routine immunization services to children and pregnant women as per national EPI schedule.
  • Ensure correct vaccine administration techniques and safe injection practices.
  • Screen clients for contraindications and provide counseling on vaccine benefits and possible side effects.
  • Maintain vaccination cards and ensure timely follow-up for due/defaulter children.

B. Cold Chain and Vaccine Management

  • Maintain cold chain equipment including ILR, deep freezer, cold boxes, and vaccine carriers.
  • Ensure vaccines are stored at recommended temperature ranges and monitor twice daily temperature logs.
  • Maintain vaccine stock registers and ensure proper inventory control (FEFO method).
  • Ensure availability of vaccines, syringes, safety boxes, and other immunization supplies.
  • Report vaccine wastage, damages, and cold chain failures promptly to the supervisor.

C. Outreach and Community Mobilization

  • Conduct outreach immunization sessions as per micro-plan.
  • Coordinate with LHWs, CHWs, and community leaders to mobilize families for immunization.
  • Trace defaulters and ensure follow-up vaccination of missed children.
  • Support health education activities to reduce vaccine hesitancy and misconceptions.

D. Campaigns and Special Activities

  • Participate in special immunization campaigns such as Polio, Measles, and other SIAs.
  • Support supplementary immunization activities, mop-up campaigns, and outbreak response immunization.
  • Ensure proper reporting and coordination during national immunization days.

E. Surveillance and Reporting

  • Support surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs).
  • Identify and report suspected cases of measles, AFP, neonatal tetanus, diphtheria, and other VPDs.
  • Assist in sample collection and coordination for investigation of suspected cases.
  • Maintain and submit daily/weekly/monthly immunization reports to the facility and district EPI office.

F. AEFI Management (Adverse Events Following Immunization)

  • Identify and manage minor AEFI cases and provide counseling to caregivers.
  • Report serious AEFI cases immediately to the Medical Officer and EPI authorities.
  • Maintain AEFI registers and support investigation teams when required.

G. Infection Prevention and Safety

  • Follow standard IPC practices during vaccination sessions.
  • Ensure safe disposal of syringes and sharps using safety boxes.
  • Ensure proper waste management according to health facility guidelines.
  • Maintain cleanliness of immunization area and equipment.

H. Documentation and Record Keeping

  • Maintain EPI registers, tally sheets, vaccination cards, and monthly summary reports.
  • Update immunization coverage data and defaulter tracking lists.
  • Maintain cold chain temperature logs and stock registers.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all EPI documentation.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Diploma/Certificate in Health Technology / Vaccination / EPI or relevant field from a recognized institute.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of clinical experience preferred Experience in immunization services preferred. Computer literacy for reporting is preferred
  • Experience in immunization services preferred.
  • Training in cold chain management, vaccine handling, and safe injection practices is an advantage.
  • Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.

  • Demonstrates superior organizational skills and the agility to multitask and assume changing strategic responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
