Its core focus includes initiatives for hard-to-reach populations through services like outreach clinics, training of community midwives to provide low-cost health services in remote areas, screening for non-communicable diseases, and digital health solutions.

Job Summary: The Surgical Technician is responsible for providing technical and clinical support in the Procedure Room/ Emergency Room and OT (if applicable) by preparing instruments, assisting during surgical procedures, maintaining sterilization standards, ensuring infection prevention control, and managing Procedure Room/ Emergency Room and OT supplies and equipment. The position ensures safe and efficient surgical services and supports emergency and surgical procedures, both minor and major procedures.

Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan, is looking for a competent Surgical Technician based at RHC Shagram, Upper-Chitral in Chitral Region. 

Key Responsibilities:

A. Operation Theatre Preparation and Assistance

  • Prepare Procedure Room/ Emergency Room and OT for surgical procedures by arranging instruments, surgical sets, equipment, and consumables.
  • Assist the Medical Officer and relevant staff during procedures/operations by providing instruments and ensuring smooth workflow.
  • Ensure availability of sterile drapes, gowns, gloves, sutures, and surgical supplies.
  • Assist in positioning of patients and preparation of operative site under supervision.
  • Maintain aseptic technique during all surgical procedures.

B. Instrument Sterilization and Infection Prevention Control (IPC)

  • Ensure cleaning, disinfection, packing, and sterilization of surgical instruments.
  • Operate autoclave and sterilization equipment according to SOPs.
  • Maintain sterilization logs, autoclave registers, and indicator records.
  • Ensure proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste, sharps, and contaminated material.
  • Maintain OT cleanliness and ensure compliance with infection control standards.

C. Surgical Equipment and OT Maintenance

  • Operate and maintain OT equipment such as suction machines, OT lights, cautery machine, oxygen supply, monitors, and anesthesia-related equipment (as assigned).
  • Perform daily OT equipment checks and ensure functionality before procedures.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment immediately and coordinate repair/maintenance.
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of sterile items and instruments.

D. Emergency and Trauma Support

  • Assist in emergency surgeries and trauma cases as required.
  • Support rapid preparation of OT during emergency procedures.
  • Assist in post-operative patient transfer and immediate post-operative care support.
  • Support mass casualty management when required.

E. Stock and Supply Management

  • Maintain OT stock registers for instruments, surgical consumables, and medicines.
  • Monitor expiry dates and ensure proper storage of sterile supplies.
  • Forecast requirements and submit timely requisitions to facility management.
  • Ensure availability of emergency surgical kits and essential OT supplies.

F. Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain OT registers, including surgical case details, instrument use, and sterilization record.
  • Assist Gynaecologist /Physician  in maintaining operation notes and case documentation (as required).
  • Record consumption of OT supplies and maintain inventory reports.
  • Submit monthly OT service reports to Facility In-Charge.

G. Post-Operative Support

  • Assist in post-operative care including dressing support and monitoring (as per assigned duties).
  • Ensure safe handling and transfer of surgical specimens to laboratory.
  • Support infection control follow-up and ensure proper OT turnaround cleaning.

H. Coordination and Professional Conduct

  • Coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, nursing staff, and ward staff for smooth surgical service delivery.
  • Participate in OT team meetings, trainings, and supportive supervision sessions.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality, dignity, and respectful behavior.
  • Follow safeguarding policies and professional code of conduct.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Facility In-Charge relevant to OT services.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Diploma in Surgical Technology / OT Technology from a recognized institute.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in OT services preferred.
  • Training in sterilization, infection control, and emergency surgical support is an advantage.
  • Registration with relevant council/authority
  • Possesses basic clinical certifications such as  BLS/ACLS.
  • Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.
  • Strong integrity with the sensitivity to manage confidential information.
  • Demonstrates superior organizational skills and the agility to multitask and assume changing strategic responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Possesses strong integrity, intellectual humility and demonstrable expertise in navigating ambiguity and constant change.

  • Knowledge of surgical instruments, sterilization procedures, and OT protocols.
